Four personal finance rules you should know by heart

There are a million tips and rules out there to guide you in personal finance. If you remember any, it should be these four:

  1. Avoid credit card debt — in most cases. This is the great abyss and there are other options, like a home equity or personal loan that might serve you better.
  2. Save and invest at least 10% of what you earn for retirement. It’s important to plan for your future and the best way to do that is to invest in yourself. 10% is a good target number.
  3. Contribute to an emergency fund. Let’s face it…things happen. A good rule of thumb is to set aside enough to cover you for a 6-month period.
  4. Live below your means. This means not just spending less than you make, but spending less than than you make after savings.
